Trigger warning: assault, depression, PTSD, suicidal ideation
Last week was a root chakra week. I cleared some crap, for sure — literally.
Not only was there a sewage issue in my house, resulting in the literal clearage of “crap” from my life, I also cleansed some deep-seeded baggage. (Yes, mopping up sewage counts as energy work!)
As I continue to work on each chakra, a new aspect of my mental health improves. The root chakra assists with grounding through life’s “storms,” so to speak. It literally connects you to the Earth and can cause all kinds of physical issues if imbalanced.
It also connects to your mental health. People with root chakra issues often feel spacey, out of touch, disconnected, and frazzled. They have issues with “clutter,” on the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual levels. If you (like me), have issues with hoarding, keeping your home clean, and even finding motivation to shower regularly (helloooo depression!) you are probably struggling in your root chakra.
Personally, my root chakra contained energies of struggle and lack, gleaned from the first two years of my life (when the root chakra typically develops).
In particular, I carried lots of beliefs about myself as a small, dis-empowered, useless person, which has left me constantly anxious and depressed since I was very young. This energy applies from the smallest to the biggest details of my life, keeping me a people pleaser in everything I do and leaving me disconnected, powerless, and alone.
After a major disappointment in my career this week, I had an enormous meltdown that felt like the end of the world. In some ways, it was. I wondered why I even existed — what’s the point? If I give people what they want and they’re still mad, why try? Why even live at all?
I was not in a good place, but it’s a common spot for me. It comes around every so often, like clockwork. Mondays are typically the day when I re-think my life purpose. Every Monday, without fail, as a matter of fact.
PTSD, too, goes along with the (lack of) safety and security that a healthy root chakra provides. I haven’t slept well since I was attacked in an alleyway by a stranger several years ago, but root chakra work assists with feeling calm and supported, even in the darkest part of night.
Wintertime, especially, triggers my insomnia, because I was attacked in early winter. Couple that with a breathtaking case of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), and you get one miserable me. (Not to mention a full moon making it hard to settle in.)
However, after several days of struggling with my usual remedies, I finally went back to my root chakra…and voila! Not perfect, by any means…but I slept. Blissful sleep is a blessing from heaven, when you can get it.
I meditated. I prayed to Source to clear the energies. I listened to root chakra healing frequencies. I got a distance Reiki session from someone I trust. I did some root chakra yin yoga to clear out the excess trauma as I let it go. I even did some root chakra work with my family (resulting in a sewer backup that had us digging up the foundations of our home while the energy cleared on every level).
With each exercise, I sensed an immediate shift. I shed plenty of old tears and emerged happier, stronger, and more stable. I felt lighter, calmer, and clearer than I have in a long time. I started to wake up feeling happier, more ready to tackle my day.
This week, I let go of some limiting beliefs that I didn’t even know I had, resulting in greater confidence and resilience. This combats burn-out, emotional instability, stress overload, and any number of other symptoms when life pushes me off-center.
With a clear(er) root chakra, my path feels clearer. I feel more able to accomplish my tasks, wake up with less brain fog, and sleep better. I also have cleared some leg and foot symptoms that have been plaguing me on and off for years.
As a bonus, clearing my root chakra always results in money blessings. When I clear my root chakra, I always get some unexpected cash. This week I manifested some free stuff and a new client.
Even though I’ve been a healer for years now, I still have plenty of “stuff” to let go of. It’s a lifelong process, and I will work on my root chakra for the rest of my life. Still, I am thankful for the release I’ve gained this week.
Energy work operates on the belief that, while there may not be a “cure” for an illness, there can be healing. Through healing comes growth — growth to a higher place than I have ever been before.
Most of us struggle with mental health at some point in our lives, but for some of us it’s chronic, constant, debilitating. It feels good to know that chakra work can support me when things get especially difficult.
Being able to flush the toilet again after the sewer repair feels pretty good, too 😉
